In a closely contested third ODI in Sharjah, Afghanistan clinched a 5-wicket victory over Bangladesh, securing the series 2-1. Despite a valiant effort, Bangladesh fell short as Afghanistan had the final say in this hard-fought match.
Batting first, Bangladesh posted a competitive 244 runs, bouncing back from an early collapse that saw them lose four wickets for just 72 runs. Veteran Mahmudullah Riyad and captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz led the recovery, building a vital 145-run partnership that steadied the innings. However, even with their impressive stand, Bangladesh couldn't seal the victory. Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons commended the partnership, highlighting the critical role it played in rebuilding the innings.
In the post-match press conference, Simmons remarked, “Their partnership was really solid. Initially, they were doing well and getting set at the crease. That’s how partnerships often work. While Miraz took a slower approach, Mahmudullah’s aggressive play balanced things, and together they made it work.”
Simmons also praised Mahmudullah’s 98-run innings off 98 balls, acknowledging the composure it brought to Bangladesh’s innings. “It was a terrific knock. He hadn’t scored in the first two games, but today he held one end firmly. Once he was set, runs came more easily. Overall, I think it was a fantastic innings,” Simmons added.
With the series concluded, Bangladesh will now turn its focus to an upcoming tour of the West Indies, where they will play a full series including 2 Tests, 3 ODIs, and 3 T20s.
