England manager Brendon McCullum said his side will be keeping a close eye on Ollie Pope's shoulder injury as they seek to maintain their Ashes ambitions at Headingley this week.
England head coach Brendon McCullum has hinted that Ollie Pope could miss the upcoming crucial third Ashes Test against Australia. The third game of the five-game series is scheduled to be played at Headingley from Thursday (July 6).
Ollie Pope suffered a shoulder injury while playing in the first innings of the second Test at Lord's that ended Sunday (July 2). The right-handed batsman injured his shoulder on the first day of play and immediately left the field.
The 25-year-old has been included in a 15-man squad for the third Test at Headingley, which England must win to have any chance of coming from a 2-0 deficit. However, it remains uncertain if he will be considered fit for the game.
Speaking to the media, England head coach Brendon McCullum said: "We will review Ollie and find a solution. We'll see how he's doing. "I was so proud of Ollie for doing what he did (at Lord's). He's a tough kid to beat in third place and wants to make a difference.”
“We still have a couple of lads that we will be keeping an eye on but we have depth in our squad – that's why the lads have had chances over the last 12 months. Whoever wins the bid will be confident that they will perform well and give us a good chance," added McCullum.
The hosts have called up Dan Lawrence as a substitute for the upcoming Test. Should Pope not recover in time for the decisive duel, Lawrence will likely be included in the squad as an equal replacement. Lawrence, who plays fourth for Essex, has 491 runs in six games with a 44.63 average, including two Centurys in the County Championship Division One.
