The talented cricketer Sybrand Engelbrecht, who was born in South Africa, has declared his retirement from international play. Engelbrecht's international career has been spectacular, however being short. He made his debut for the Netherlands in 2023. He did play for South Africa in the 2008 Men's U19 World Cup, where he made a spectacular catch to dismiss a young Virat Kohli in Jonty Rhodes style.
Engelbrecht, 35, initially retired from all forms of cricket in 2016, marking an early end to what could have been a promising career. However, his passion for the sport never ended. In 2021, Engelbrecht moved to the Netherlands, where he began playing recreational cricket. His exceptional performance in these games did not go unnoticed, leading to his selection for the Netherlands national cricket team in 2023.
However, Engelbrecht's debut year was nothing short of spectacular. Playing in 12 ODIs and 12 T20Is, he quickly established himself as a key player for the Dutch side. His most notable performance came during the ODI World Cup in India last year. Engelbrecht emerged as the leading run-getter for the Netherlands, amassing 300 runs in eight innings. His impressive average of 37.50 and a strike rate of 66.66, including two half-centuries, underscored his vital role in the team's campaign.
Engelbrecht performed excellently in the T20 format, scoring 280 runs at an average of 31.11 and a strike rate of 132.70. He was the Netherlands' leading run-scorer at the recent T20 World Cup, with 98 runs at an average of 24.50. His outstanding performances were scores of 40 and 33 in tight losses against Full Members South Africa and Bangladesh.
