The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed Mohammed Naveed Nawaz as the new Under-19 Team Head Coach and Batting Consultant for Junior Age Group Teams under BCB Game Development. His two-year appointment will take effect on July 1, 2024. It will be his second tenure as head coach of the U19 team.
Nawaz, who previously worked for Bangladesh Cricket for two years, offers a plethora of experience and knowledge to the position. During his first tenure, which ran from July 2018 to February 2020, he was the Bangladesh U19 Team's head coach. The Bangladeshi squad triumphed in the 2020 ICC Under 19 World Cup in South Africa, led by him. It was Bangladesh’s first-ever major trophy in an ICC event.
Following the departure of Australian Stuart Law, the BCB shortlisted three coaches for the U19 head coach position: Ijaz Ahmed (Pakistan), Naveed Nawaz (Sri Lanka), and Wasim Jaffer (India). From there, Naveed has been selected as the head coach.
Naveed has a long coaching experience as he earlier worked as the head coach of Sri Lanka U19 team back in 2009. He was also involved with the Sri Lankan A as well as Sri Lankan Women team in different capacities. After the tenure with Bangladesh U19 last time, he joined Sri Lankan national team as an assistant coach.
However, the 44-year old former cricketer does not have a good international cricket record as he played only one Test and three ODIs in his career for Sri Lanka national team.
