Shahriar Nafees has played 24 Tests, 75 One Day Internationals, and one T20 as a Bangladeshi cricketer. However, this former captain has never played a match at the Bangabandhu Stadium. Once the home of cricket, this stadium has witnessed many historic moments. But when Nafees started playing, cricket had moved to Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.
The Bangabandhu Stadium has not only been used as Bangladesh's home venue but also previously as Pakistan's home venue before the division of the countries. This ground has witnessed the spectators of India-Pakistan Tests or the opening ceremonies of World Cups. On this occasion, the cricketers put their fitness to test in the atheletics track.
Shahriar Nafees had come here as the Cricket Operations Manager for the BCB. Nafees shared his disappointment on not being able to play an international game in this historic ground.
Nafees said, "Our interest in the game was created by watching matches in this stadium. I still remember probably around 1993 or 1994 when I first came to this ground to watch a match. Since the cricketers were playing, Faruk bhai was the captain of the national team. Alongside, as the iconic players were there."
Nafees added, ""My domestic cricket for Bangladesh started here. My first significant innings under nineteen in a practice match against India, it was on this ground. I haven't played any match for the national team here, that's a regret for me. Bangabandhu Stadium symbolizes Bangladesh's sports arenas. There's really no opportunity to come here and not feel good about it."
