Ahead of Bangladesh’s much-anticipated series against South Africa, the team made a surprising move by replacing head coach Chandika Hathurusingha with Caribbean legend Phil Simmons. Having joined the squad just before the series, Simmons is still in the early stages of settling into his role but is quickly adjusting to the team, thanks to the support of the players and coaching staff.
Pakistan's former cricketer and current spin coach for Bangladesh, Mushtaq Ahmed, believes that Simmons has the potential to make a significant impact on the team. Mushtaq emphasized that the West Indian great, known for his calm and composed demeanor, is already blending well with the players, and the rest of the coaching staff is working hard to help him settle in smoothly.
Mushtaq commented, " Phil is a very relaxed guy. I think he believes in the environment. He is a good man. I started working with him for the first time. I think he is a good man. When you take over and start making decisions for any team, you know it is going to take some time. I think maybe a couple of series is going to take him to understand the culture and mindset. The senior guys are playing a huge role. The other coaching staffs are giving most of the support. The local guys are also giving him support."
During the press conference, Mushtaq also reflected on his experience working with the team as a spin coach, highlighting the eagerness of the players to learn and improve, especially in the spin department. He noted, "There are some great young talents in the squad. The boys are eager to learn, particularly in the spin department. It will take some time, but with the right approach to situations, field setups, and understanding when to attack or play safe, the spinners can thrive."
While Simmons has yet to fully take on the reins, his calm and composed approach, combined with support from the experienced coaching team, hints at a promising journey ahead for Bangladesh under his guidance.
