Kolkata Knight Riders' all-rounder Moeen Ali has voiced his agreement with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over its decision to impose a two-year ban on players who withdraw from the Indian Premier League (IPL) without a valid reason. Moeen’s comments come after England batter Harry Brook became the first player to face this ban, following his withdrawal from the 2025 IPL season after being picked in the auction for the second consecutive year.

The IPL governing council introduced new rules before the 2025 season which state that any player who withdraws from the tournament without a valid reason will be banned from entering the IPL auction for the next two seasons. Brook’s decision to pull out has triggered this penalty.

Moeen, along with Adil Rashid, Brook’s teammate, has shown support for the decision. Speaking on the podcast Beard Before Cricket, Moeen remarked, “It’s not harsh. I kind of agree with it, in a way, because a lot of people do that.”

“A lot of people have done it in the past, and then they come back in and they end up getting a better financial package, or whatever it is. And he kind of messes a lot of things up as well at the same time,” Moeen explained.

“I mean, it’s messed his team up, obviously, by pulling out. Any team that loses Harry Brook is messed up a bit, and they’ve got to now rejig everything and stuff like that," Moeen added, emphasizing the impact of such decisions on team dynamics.

Moeen further noted that pulling out without injury or family reasons could lead to consequences, saying, “If it’s injury or something, it’s different. But if you just pull out, then I kind of agree with the teams—you mess a lot of stuff up.”
