Australia’s star pacer Mitchell Starc becomes the fifth bowler in the history of the ICC World Cup to take 50 wickets. He was the second Australian and the fifth bowler overall to accomplish this feat.
This landmark was reached by the pacer during India's opening match of their campaign in the ICC Cricket World Cup, which took place in Chennai against Australia.
During the defence of 200 runs, Starc struck first by dismissing Ishan Kishan for a golden duck. This was the first wicket to go. At the end of the game, he had numbers of 1/31 in eight overs.
In 19 World Cup matches, he has taken 50 wickets at a 15.14 wickets per game average, and his best bowling stats are 6/28.
The record that Starc set by taking 27 wickets in 10 World Cup games at the 2019 edition of the event is still in place. He has taken the most wickets in a single iteration of the competition to earn the title of most successful bowler. In the 2015 competition, which was played in Australia, Australia won the trophy for the sixth time, and he collected 22 wickets during the competition.
In the history of the World Cup, the bowlers who have taken the most wickets are as follows: Glenn McGrath of Australia took 71 wickets in 39 matches, Muttiah Muralitharan of Sri Lanka took 68 wickets in 40 matches, Lasith Malinga of Sri Lanka took 56 wickets in 29 matches, and Wasim Akram of Pakistan took 55 wickets in 38 matches.
Starc has reached the landmark of 50 World Cup wickets in just 941 balls, making him the player who has done it the quickest in terms of the number of balls taken. Malinga took 1,187 balls to get to the milestone, making him the player with the second-best score here. Starc is ranked lower on this list than other greats such as McGrath, Akram, and Muralitharan.
