The Melbourne Renegades have requested that Netherlands captain Scott Edwards replace the injured Joe Clarke for the final two games of the BBL season.
Edwards is presently in South Africa as a member of the Netherlands team on a training tour. This tour consists of a month-long camaraderie and five practice matches against SA20 opponents prior to the commencement of the tournament.
However, Edwards, who is also a citizen of Australia, is returning to Melbourne, his birthplace, early from South Africa in order to be present for the final two BBL matches of the Renegades. Until Thursday's match against Hobart Hurricanes, when Quinton de Kock departs for the SA20, the team will be without a specialist wicketkeeper-batsman.
Renegades have no local wicketkeepers on their roster, having exchanged legspinner Adam Zampa for Sam Harper, who was traded to Melbourne Stars. They had secured the services of de Kock for the six games he was available to play, and Clarke was entrusted with the responsibility for the remaining matches. However, Clarke's quad injury that ended the season threw a wrench in the works.
Despite being named the premier player in Victoria's Premier Cricket competition in 2021 and claiming the Ryder Medal, Edwards has yet to make an appearance in the BBL or secure a contract.
