Angelo Mathews, a veteran all-rounder, and Dushmantha Chameera, a pacer, will both join Sri Lanka's World Cup team in Lucknow on Friday as traveling reserves, according to an announcement made by the country's cricket board on Thursday.
The selection committee had originally intended to bring in Pramod Madushan, but now that Chameera is "fully recovered," they have chosen to bring in the seasoned seamer instead in order to boost the team's bowling assault, which has been lacking.
Their skipper Dasun Shanaka has been replaced by all-rounder Chamika Karunaratne due to his quadriceps tear, which would keep him out of action for almost three weeks.
The Sri Lankan cricket team is already in a very fragile state due to the injury of one cricketer after another. They have played 3 matches in the World Cup so far and lost all of them. The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has decided to send two more cricketers to deal with injury problems in the future.
The SLC confirmed the two cricketers joining the team in a press release today (October 19). However, Mathews and Chamira are not officially members of the World Cup squad yet. If someone in the team is out of the World Cup due to injury, then any of the two can enter the team. The Lankan Cricket Board has taken such a decision to handle the future situation.
According to SLC, Mathews and Chameera will join the team in India tomorrow October 20. Sri Lanka's next match is on October 21, against the Netherlands. The match will be played in Lucknow at 2:30 pm Bangladesh time.
