Australia thumped South Africa by a massive margin of 111 runs on Thursday (31st August) at Kingsmead, Durban. Marsh's blistering 92*, David's firing 68 and Tanveer's four far helped Aussies win over South Africa and go 1-0 up in the T20I series.
Australia had four debutants - pacer Spencer Johnson, opener Matt Short, leggie Tanveer Sangha and all rounder Aaron Hardie. While South Africa debuted two - attacking batter Dewald Brevis and Coetzee. South Africa won the toss and decided to bowl first on a batting paradise. The decision was surely boomeranged them as Australia came out all guns blazing. Despite losing Travis Head in the first over, Australia took 70 within the powerplay, actually in 5 overs as the last over of powerplay was maiden - wicket from Coetzee.
Australia lost a clump of wickets in the phase of 5-7 overs but their run rate didn’t come down. And then Marsh and Tim David strung an absolute mammoth partnership with the duo added 97 on the board before David fell to a blinder from Bavuma. Before getting back to the hutch he made a fantastic 64 off just 28 balls with a jaw dropping strike rate of 228.67. However, Mitchell Marsh and Aaron Hardie finished things nicely as Hardie made a quick-fire 23 off 14 and Marsh finished with a glorious 92* off only 49 balls. With the contributions from Marsh, Short, Hardie and David Australia posted an indomitable total of 226-6 after alloted 20 overs.
In reply of 227, South Africa didn’t start to their best. Mercus Stoinis sent back Temba Bavuma as a beautiful inswinger got the stumps of Bavuma in the very first over. Spencer Johnson too started very well by giving only dots and conceding singles. Sean Abbott then got rid of dangerous Van Der Dussen. South Africa took 53 inside powerplay losing two wickets. After the powerplay, the young leggie Tanveer Sangha came and he got rid of Protea skipper Aiden Markram for 7 off 7. Tanveer then started running riot through the Protea batting lineup. He got the wickets of Dewald Brevis, Tristan Stubs, Merco Jensen and finished on 31 and picking up a four far. Stoinis then picked up two wickets and left South Africa stuttering for 109-8. However they were bundled for 115 runs and Australia won the match by 111 runs and went 1-0 up in the T20I series.
