New Zealand was dealt a big blow after in-form batsman Mark Chapman had to be sidelined from the second ODI after suffering a hamstring injury while playing a record-breaking 132-run innings in the first match of the series.
New Zealand was suffers a big blow before the second ODI against Pakistan when it was revealed that in-form batsman Mark Chapman would be missing the game after picking up an injury.
Chapman had played a magnificent century in the Black Caps' comprehensive 73-run win in the series opener at Napier, but picked up a hamstring strain while fielding, and follow-up scans found a grade I tear in the injured region.
In his absence, New Zealand has summoned wicketkeeper and batsman Tim Seifert, who was in top form during the just-concluded five-match T20I series against Pakistan, scoring 249 runs at a remarkable average of 62.
New Zealand head coach Gary Stead expressed disappointment at Mark Chapman's injury, but expressed relief that it was only minor.
"This is obviously disappointing news for Mark after a truly special innings in the first ODI in Napier," Stead said.
"We are grateful that the hamstring injury is only minor and hope that Mark can complete his rehabilitation and be available for the final game of the summer at Mount."
With Seifert, the Black Caps have another world-class batsman option available in their team, and the 30-year-old was himself in fine nick in the T20I portion of the series against Pakistan.
Seifert was the leading run-scorer in the five-match series with 249 runs, and Stead is confident that he can do it again in the 50-over game.
"With a number of new players added to the team, it's excellent to have a player of Tim's experience," stated Stead.
"He's on top of his game following an excellent T20 series and provides another solid top-flight batsman option for a crucial game tomorrow."
