Ireland thumped Afghanistan by 6 wickets on Friday (1st March) and created history in Abu Dhabi. Mark Adair's fifer in the first innings and 3 fer in the second innings kept Afghanistan in control. Fifty in the fourth innings from skipper Balbirnie aided them chase down the paltry 111 runs at ease.
Earlier, Afghanistan were into the lead of 8 runs with Shahidi and Gurbaz going strong. But Mark Adair in the morning didn't allow them to flourish as he picked up the wicket of the former one, while Gurbaz was knocked over from a corker off Craig Young.
Afghanistan were in all sorts of trouble.
The middle order collapsed horribly and Afghanistan found no way to soak the pressure. Naveed Zadran at the backend of the innings made 25 off 53 balls, only highlight from the middle order. Afghanistan just accumulated 218 runs and gave Ireland a target of 111 runs.
Chasing the measly total, Ireland faltered earlier on as Naveed Zadran removed Moor and Curtis Campher for ducks and Ireland were crumbling on 8-2. Things went turbulent when Nijat Masood got the wicket of Harry Tector on 2 off 7. But a serious partnership between Balbirnie and Lorcan Tucker helped them come out of troubles. The partnership was worth of 72 runs which took them cross the line and win the match by 6 wickets.
