Uncapped Mahidul Islam Ankon has replaced wicket-keeper batter Jaker Ali Anik in Bangladesh’s squad for the second Test against South Africa in Chattogram, set to begin tomorrow. Jaker was ruled out following a concussion sustained in a practice session on Sunday, an injury that could require a longer recovery period due to his concussion history.
Bangladesh team physio Bayjedul Islam Khan shared insights into Jaker's condition, stating: "Jaker Ali had suffered a concussion while batting in practice yesterday (Sunday). He has a history of concussions and is still showing symptoms. Given his previous concussion record, recovery may take some time. Based on the clinical findings, he has been ruled out of the second Test."
Mahidul Islam, a 25-year-old middle-order wicket-keeper batter from Dhaka Division, brings valuable experience and form, with a tally of 1,934 runs in 43 first-class matches. Recently, he showcased his skills in the National Cricket League (NCL), scoring a hundred (118) against Sylhet Division in his only innings of the season. This consistent performance in the domestic circuit has earned Mahidul his maiden Test call-up.
The absence of Jaker Ali, who contributed a crucial 58 off 111 balls in Bangladesh's first Test against South Africa, forming a pivotal partnership with Mehidy Hasan Miraz, is a notable setback for the team. However, Mahidul’s inclusion adds depth and experience to the lineup as Bangladesh seek a series-level win in Chattogram.
