Bangladesh cricket team achieved a historic milestone on Friday, December 19, by completing a stunning 3-0 whitewash against the West Indies in their T20I series. The final match in Kingstown showcased Bangladesh’s dominance as they defeated the hosts by a massive 80 runs. This marks the first time Bangladesh has secured a bilateral T20I series victory over the West Indies.
Stand-in captain Litton Das reflected on the team's success, attributing it to a pressure-free environment and the consistent performances of both the bowling and batting units. “If you see we have played well in Test cricket and ODI also. Unfortunately, we did not win the matches but we played good cricket. So we had that confidence of playing all the series very well. I always tell the boys, don't take pressure, just come and enjoy the game. We know we have a very good bowling attack and batting lineup. If we score well, we can defend any total,” Litton remarked.
He praised the coaching staff, including Phil Simmons, for fostering a supportive environment: “He (Simmons) never gave any pressure. We just feel free to play cricket. I explained our decision and everything. The entire coaching staff and management did really well, helping us improve day by day.”
Batting first, Bangladesh posted a formidable total of 189/7, thanks to an explosive 72* off 41 balls from Jaker Ali, supported by Parvez Hossain Emon’s 39 and Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s 29. Despite early losses, the middle-order resurgence ensured a challenging target for the West Indies.
The West Indies struggled against Bangladesh’s disciplined bowling attack and were bundled out for just 109 in 16.4 overs. Rishad Hossain led the charge with 3 wickets, while Taskin Ahmed and Mahedi Hasan each claimed 2 scalps.
Litton Das applauded the bowling unit for its character and ability to defend targets: “The way our bowlers showed character is amazing because the West Indies have a strong batting lineup with power hitters. To defend 180 and win by 80 runs is a big achievement.”
Litton also expressed optimism about the team's future: “At the moment, we have played really well in the series. Whenever we play again, we need to come back stronger and play good cricket.”
With their sights set on 2025 and beyond, this series victory signifies Bangladesh’s growing prowess on the global stage.
