Earlier, England opted to bat first. Coming out to bat they were shambolic at the start of their innings. They lost Dawid Malan on his individual 28. A brilliant piece of fielding resulted Joe Root's run out. And then they lost set Johny Bairstow on his 30 off 31 balls. Joss Buttler's poor run continued as he gone to Lahiru Kumara. Livingstone was plumb infront and he too gone in span of 2 overs and England were stuttering on 85-5.
Ben Stokes and Moeen stitched a partnership of 37 runs before Moeen fell to Mathews. Stokes scored a gutsy 43 and none of the batter stood tall and aided him as a result they were bundled for a paltry 156.
In reply, they lost Kusal Perera earlier of their innings and lost their skipper Kusal Mendis as well. But opener Pathum Nissanka and number four batter Sadeera Samarawickrama started to take on the English batters. They saw the first phase and were happy with taking singles and doubles and then once they got settled they started to smack them hard. The partnership was worth of 137 runs. Pathum Nissanka scored a magnificent 77 from just 83 deliveries and Sadeera Samarawickrama was quick and was on a mission to finish the game as soon as possible. He went for scoring 65 from only 54 balls and took Sri Lanka home comfortably. With the win England now at 9th position and Sri Lanka went to the 5th position just behind of Australia.
