Being inserted to bat first, Kiwis lost Devon Conway earlier on. Captain Tom Latham and Kane Williamson then stitched a superb partnership together and added 58 runs to bail New Zealand out of trouble. Latham fell 3 runs short of his fifty as he departed to Brydon Carse.
Rachin Ravindra had a fine start but couldn’t make a long innings as he fell to Shoaib Bashir on 24. Daryl Mitchell too couldn’t score much as Brydon Carse got him out.
The middle order had a collapse but Glenn Phillips stood tall and smashed an excellent 41* off only 58 balls to help his side get over 300 and get to 319 runs after the end of day one.
New Zealand are on 318-8, with Glenn Phillips still on the crease, they'll be hoping to cross 350 mark barrier to give a solid total in the first innings.
England, on the contrary, will be eyeing to get rid of Glenn Phillips to restrict the Blackcaps inside 350 runs.
