There was noise around to place Josh Inglis at the opening position in the Australia's Test lineup in the highly-anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy. But chief selector George Bailey has stated that the wicketkeeper is not one of the contenders to open the innings with Usman Khawaja.
Josh Inglis After the retirement of David Warner, Steve Smith was sent to the opening position to fill the shoes of Warner. And Cameron Green was promoted to No. 4. However, an operation has ruled Green out of the entire Test summer, which enforced Smith to get back to his preferred position and Australia are into dilemma on the other opener.
The wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis has been in stunning form in the ongoing Sheffield Shield, having amassed four hundreds from seven outings. But despite his success at the Sheffield Shield, George Bailey said they want solid opener to bat at the top.
"Not in the short-term. I don't think that he's someone we would be looking to place at the top of the order. There's no doubt that his form is really fantastic at the moment and the ability to jump back into domestic cricket and dominate has been fantastic," Bailey told the reporters on Monday.
"We've got three players who open the batting for their state and one player who bats at three. We're looking for performance. The standard of cricket is pretty high, so that's always a great opportunity seeing how players interact in a different team to what they're used to," Bailey stated.
Sam Konstas, Marcus Harris, and Cameron Bancroft will get opportunities to showcase their skills and form during the upcoming Australia A matches against India A ahead of Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
