India's stand-in captain for the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024, Jasprit Bumrah, has issued a strong statement of support for star batter Virat Kohli. Addressing a press conference on the eve of the opening Test in Perth, Bumrah expressed confidence in Kohli’s form and preparation, while also hinting at the possibility of pacer Mohammad Shami joining the squad for the series.
Bumrah's Confidence in Kohli’s Preparation
Bumrah, leading India for the second time in his career, was asked about Kohli's recent form, especially after the batter managed just 91 runs in 3 innings during a 0-3 Test series loss against New Zealand. Dismissing concerns, Bumrah praised Kohli’s professionalism and work ethic.
“I don’t have to say anything about Virat Kohli, the batter. He is one of the greats of the game. I don’t need to give him any special input. He is the utmost professional. He is one of the leaders. I made my debut under him. He knows what he is doing. Okay, one or two series, here and there, can up and down.
"But, the confidence he has at this moment, I have no doubts about how he has prepared. He is looking to contribute. The signs are ominous, I don’t want to jinx it by saying anything else, but he is looking in very good shape,” Bumrah told reporters in press conference.
Update on Mohammad Shami's Return
Bumrah also addressed the topic of Mohammad Shami, who has recently returned to competitive cricket after recovering from ankle surgery.
“Shami bhai has started to play cricket, and obviously, he is an integral part of this team. I'm sure the management is also keeping a keen eye (on him). Hopefully, things fall in place and you might see him here as well,”Bumrah stated.
