Bangladesh etched their name in the history books by completing a 3-0 whitewash over the West Indies in the T20I series on Friday, December 19, 2024. The visitors secured an emphatic 80-run victory in the final match held at Kingstown, marking their first-ever bilateral T20I series sweep against the Caribbean side.
Star of the match, Jaker Ali, who was adjudged Player of the Match for his unbeaten 72 off 41 balls, shared his emotions and reflections on this remarkable achievement.
Reflecting on the series, Jaker expressed gratitude and determination: “Actually, Alhamdulillah for everything (Praise to The Almighty). It's been quite a wonderful series for me throughout the Test series, ODI, and the T20I.”
Discussing his approach in the final match, Jaker highlighted the importance of patience: “The wicket was very good compared to the last two games. I was just trying to take time and give time [at the crease]. I know myself—if I go deep in the game, I will score some runs.”
Jaker revealed a moment of frustration and redemption during the match. After being involved in two mix-ups resulting in runouts, he was initially overcome with regret: “I think that's a horrible mix-up. In the dressing room, I was just kicking myself, my bat, and everything around me. And suddenly the third umpire (fourth umpire) called me. And another runout happened because of me. I was just kicking myself and I was broke at that moment.”
However, he credited divine intervention for his eventual success: “But Alhamdulillah (Praise to The Almighty) allowed me to play for my team. I have scored their runs too (Shamim and Mahedi).”
Jaker emphasized the importance of preparation and mental toughness against the West Indies’ powerful lineup: “Actually, it's all about the mindset. You know the Caribbean big boys will come at you hard in any format of the game. And especially in the Windies situation.”
He shared how past experiences in the Caribbean during the World Cup helped him focus: “I didn’t play well, so when I went back home, I took preparation for this tour particularly. And yes, things are going good for me now.”
Bangladesh set a challenging target of 190, powered by Jaker Ali’s scintillating 72* and a quick-fire 39 from Parvez Hossain Emon. The West Indies, in response, crumbled to 109 all out, with Rishad Hossain leading the bowling effort with 3 wickets.
The 80-run victory cemented Bangladesh’s dominance in the series, showcasing their growing prowess in international cricket.
