England spinner Jack Leach has made it clear that he is determined to secure a spot on England's upcoming winter tour to Pakistan, following his match-winning performance for Somerset in the Vitality County Championship. Leach, who claimed 12 wickets for 174 runs in Somerset's emphatic 293-run victory over Durham, is focused on making a return to international cricket after a challenging period of injuries.
Leach, who had been England's first-choice spinner during Ben Stokes' initial year as captain, has not featured for the national team since January. He was recently overshadowed by Somerset teammate Shoaib Bashir, who has made a significant impact with three five-wicket hauls in his first eight Tests. Despite this, Leach remains hopeful of regaining his place in the England squad for the Pakistan tour.
"I totally understand the reason why ‘Bash’ has been selected," Leach said. "I rate him really highly and think he is already a very good bowler with a lot of promise for the future. We have worked together a lot, and I am very proud of him and want to see him flourish. But there is a tour to Pakistan coming up, and if England need me, I am more than happy to go."
Leach’s performance against Durham, where he took seven wickets in the second innings to bowl out the opposition for 126, has bolstered his confidence. "I feel I am getting back to my best after almost a year with niggles that have taken some overcoming," he added. "Long spells like I have had against Durham certainly help in that respect."
Leach also expressed his eagerness to contribute to Somerset’s campaign as they look to close the gap on Championship leaders Surrey. "In the meantime, I want to do all I can to help Somerset win the Championship. We are all excited at the prospect of facing Surrey at Taunton next as one of three hugely important games."
As Leach strives to reclaim his spot in the England team, his recent performances have certainly put him back on the radar, making him a strong candidate for the Pakistan tour if the selectors decide to include multiple spinners.
The upcoming series in Pakistan will be a significant opportunity for Leach to prove his form and fitness, potentially alongside Shoaib Bashir, as England prepares for their winter assignments.
