Bangladesh have been suffering in batting for a long time now. It was clearly visible in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 also, where Bangladesh were eliminated from the Super Eight phase. Bangladesh pacer and T20 World Cup vice-captain Taskin Ahmed also said that he had never seen such a long period of trouble in batting.
The pacers of Bangladesh were in flying form in the T20 World Cup. With the wicket and conditions in their favour, Taskin, Mustafizur Rahman, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Rishad Hossain repeatedly brought up occasions for celebration. But it was not fulfilled due to the failure of the batters.
Rishad is the third highest wicket-taker in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 till now with 14 wickets. Tanzim Sakib also played well. He got 11 wickets.
Taskin said, “The bowling department has improved well over the last few years. We have maintained consistency. The future will be better. There is no end to the good. And about the batting disaster, frankly, when the matches were played in the United States in the first round of the World Cup, the wickets were not favourable for the batters. If you look at the statistics, big batters from other countries have also suffered there.”
Even yet, it's difficult to overlook such subpar batting. It is impossible to dispute that, Taskin added, “The bowlers had a little extra advantage there. After going to the West Indies, we played on slightly better wickets. But that's actually… so long… I’m playing cricket for the Bangladesh team for the last 10 years but I've never seen such a long bad patch in batting. Hope it passes very quickly.”
The two more experienced players on the team, Mahmudullah Riyad and Shakib Al Hasan, were largely to blame for the batting unit's collapse due to their lack of rhythm. Taskin added that the team has suffered because of their poor performance.
He further said, “The lack of rhythm of the two seniors has definitely affected our team. But there was no impact outside the field. Because off the field they are always good team men. We were together for 47 days, everyone behaved very well, everyone was together. Off the field everything was fine. In fact, if the important players of the team are not in rhythm, it is normal to have problems in that team. I hope to get over this quickly and do something good in the future.”
