Gujarat Titans' captain Shubman Gill was not a happy man after the team succumbed to a 33-run defeat against Lucknow Super Giants in the match 21 of IPL 2024 at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
Shubman GillBatting first, LSG posted 163/5 in their quota of 20 overs, courtesy of Marcus Stoinis' 58 off 43 and Nicholas Pooran's 32 off 22. GT bowlers chipped in with disciplinary bowling performances to contain runs in crucial phases of the game. Umesh Yadav was the pick of the bowlers as he registered 2/22 in 3 overs.
The Ahmedabad-based franchise had the game in their hands in the run-chase. However, they let the chance slip away from their hands when they lost wickets at regular intervals. GT got off to a good start in the form of Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan as the duo added 54 runs for the opening wicket.
When things were going so well, Shubman Gill was bowled by Yash Thakur in the last ball of the powerplay overs, in what was the turning point of the game. GT were bowled out for130 and lost the game in a disappointing manner.
Following the result, Shubman Gill launched a scathing attack on the GT batters for failing to show defiance in the run-chase. "It was a good wicket to bat on, a poor batting performance by us. We got a decent start, but we lost wickets in the middle and couldn't recover from that. Our bowlers were exceptional as they restricted them to 160-odd, just that our batters let us down," he added.
He further spoke about the importance of David Miller in the team who missed the last couple of games due to an injury. "Miller is a kind of a player who can change a game in a couple of overs, because I think this total was very gettable for us."
Last but not least, he opened up on his dismissal. "I thought it was the last over of the powerplay and I just wanted to make the most of it, just that I missed that ball as I tried to play a bit too square. It was tremendous to watch our bowlers bowl, we were looking forward to restricting them around 160-165," he said.
