The ICC ODI World Cup 2023, hosted by India, has generated a staggering USD 1.39 billion (Rs 11,637 crore) for the Indian economy, according to a detailed report published by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on September 11, 2024. The 2023 tournament, which ran from October 5 to November 19, across 10 cities, saw a record 1.25 million spectators, marking the highest attendance in the tournament's history.
The tournament not only celebrated cricket but also acted as a massive economic driver. ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice remarked, “The ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 has demonstrated the significant economic power of cricket, generating economic benefit of USD 1.39 billion for India. The event created thousands of jobs and showcased India as a premier tourist destination."
Tourism emerged as the largest contributor, with USD 861.4 million in revenue coming from accommodation, travel, transportation, and food sectors. Both domestic and international tourists flocked to cities like Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, and more, contributing significantly to the local economy. A further USD 515.7 million came from secondary spending, with visitors spending on various local services during their stay.
International spectators made up 19% of total attendees, with many visiting India for the first time. The surge in tourism saw visitors traveling not just to match locations but also to key tourist spots across India, contributing USD 281.2 million. Moreover, 68% of these international fans expressed their intention to recommend India as a tourist destination, which could boost future tourism.
The World Cup 2023 also created over 48,000 full and part-time jobs, with the majority centered around the hospitality and service sectors, adding USD 18 million in value to the economy. Investments in stadium infrastructure by the ICC and BCCI further spurred local business growth, while the Pan-India economic impact (outside of host cities) reached USD 253.9 million.
Media coverage during the tournament provided additional benefits, with USD 70.7 million generated in exposure for cities, local businesses, and brands.
The report highlights the long-term potential for Indian tourism, with 59% of international attendees indicating that they would visit India again in the future. This lasting impact underscores how major sporting events like the Cricket World Cup can serve as powerful engines for economic growth and international engagement.
