Veteran left-handed batter Imrul Kayes couldn’t make his final first-class innings memorable, scoring just 1 run in his farewell innings. Kayes’ disappointing exit mirrored the struggles of Khulna Division, who were bundled out for a mere 91 runs in their second innings at Mirpur.
The second day began with Dhaka Division’s Ariful Haque and Taibur Rahman building a solid start. However, the partnership ended at 135 runs when Taibur edged a delivery from Al-Amin into the slip cordon, where Imrul Kayes held a sharp catch.
What followed was a dramatic collapse as Dhaka lost their last six wickets for just 25 runs. Ariful remained the top scorer with 62 runs, but Dhaka was bowled out for 160, conceding a slim 12-run first-innings lead to Khulna.
In Khulna’s second innings, opener Anamul Haque Bijoy started positively, hitting a flurry of boundaries. However, he fell for 10, top-edging a pull shot off Sumon Khan’s bouncer.
Imrul Kayes, batting at No. 3, walked out to a guard of honor, acknowledging his illustrious career. Unfortunately, his innings ended in just three balls when he edged a delivery from pacer Anamul Haque to the keeper for 1 run.
In the same over, Anamul struck twice more, removing Mohammad Mithun and trapping Nahidul Islam LBW. Khulna found themselves at 22 for 4, a position from which they never recovered. The innings ended at 91, leaving Dhaka Division with a target of 104 runs to chase on the third day.
Over a career spanning 138 matches and 248 innings, Imrul Kayes amassed 7,947 runs at an average of 34.50. His record includes 20 centuries and 27 half-centuries, making him one of Bangladesh’s finest red-ball players.
Dhaka Division now has a straightforward target of 104 runs on Day 3, setting the stage for a likely victory. With Khulna’s fragile batting display, Dhaka’s bowlers will look to capitalize on their momentum when they return to the crease.
