According to media reports on Thursday, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has incurred losses of around $20 million due to hosting the 2024 T20 World Cup matches in the USA.
According to a report, the International Cricket Council incurred losses of around $20 million (Rs 167 crore) due to hosting the 2024 T20 World Cup matches in the US. The report said this will be one of the main topics of discussion during the ICC annual conference, which begins in Colombo on Friday.
Although the issue is not part of the nine-point agenda of the general meeting, the report states that it will be discussed as a “follow-up report.” Much of the tournament was played in the US, including the highly anticipated match between India and Pakistan, which took place in New York.
A total of 16 games were played in the United States, with New York, Florida and Dallas hosting the games. The surprise victory of the USA over Pakistan also sparked great curiosity about the game in the country. According to the ICC, a total of 2.7 million US-based users visited its website and app during the competition, an incredible 370 percent increase over the 2022 T20 World Cup.
Another important issue that will be discussed during the AGM is the replacement of Greg Barclay by BCCI secretary Jay Shah as ICC chairman. According to the PTI report, an ICC source said that one of the main areas of interest for everyone at the ICC is when Shah will take over the leadership of the world body.
“It is not a matter of how but when as he still has one year left as BCCI secretary before his cooling-off period in the Indian board begins in 2025 as per the constitution. However, if he has to take over in 2025, Barclay will not be able to complete his third two-year term from December 2024 to December 2026,” the ICC source said.
“It is expected that the ICC Chairmanship term will change from three two-year terms to two three-year terms, bringing the total term to six years.”
It is widely believed that if Barclay's current term is three years, Shah may complete his six years as BCCI secretary and take over as chairman of the ICC for three years in 2025 when he is in a cooling-off period at the BCCI. He can then come back in 2028 and take over the position of CEO.
