Team India are not just a cricketing powerhouse, they are a team with a rich legacy of winning on the biggest stages. Over the years, the cricket giant has risen to the occasion, showcasing grit, skill and moments of pure magic to lift several senior ICC trophies.
MS Dhoni
From the iconic 1983 World Cup win that changed Indian cricket forever to the thrilling T20 World Cup triumph in 2007, each title has its own story. Yes, a story of hard work, team spirit, and seizing the moment. Let’s take a simple walk down memory lane and revisit all the ICC trophies that India won so far.
1. 1983 ODI World Cup - Won against West Indies by 43 runs (London)
India’s first-ever ICC title came under Kapil Dev's captaincy. In the final at Lord’s, India batted first and posted a modest 183 in 54.4 overs. Kris Srikkanth top-scored with 38 (7 fours, 1 six). West Indies, chasing 184 for their third straight World Cup win, were bowled out for 140 in 52 overs.
Madan Lal was the pick of the bowlers for India as he took 3 wickets, including the prized wickets of Vivian Richards and Desmond Haynes. Mohinder Amarnath who scored 28 and took 3/12 was named the Man of the Match. India won by 43 runs, which sparked a cricketing revolution in the country and is still remembered as the moment that changed Indian cricket forever.
2. 2002 Champions Trophy - Shared with Sri Lanka (Colombo)
Led by Sourav Ganguly, India reached the Champions Trophy final against Sri Lanka. Rain washed out both the final and the reserve day, and since there was no result, the trophy was shared.
Sri Lanka scored 244/5 in 50 overs, and India were at 14/0 in 2 overs when the match was abandoned. It may not have been an ideal way to win, but it added to India’s ICC trophy count.
3. 2007 T20 World Cup - Won against Pakistan by 5 runs (Johannesburg)
India’s young team, captained by MS Dhoni, stunned everyone by winning the inaugural T20 World Cup. In the final against Pakistan, the young Indian side set a target of 157/5 in 20 overs, thanks to Gautam Gambhir’s 75 off 54 balls.
The Green Shirts took the game to the final over and as it turned out in a tense finish, Joginder Sharma bowled a tricky slower ball to Misbah-ul-Haq and the latter mistimed the scoop shot before it was caught by Sreesanth, giving India a 5-run win. It was a thrilling victory and that cemented Dhoni’s legacy as a captain.
4. 2011 ODI World Cup - Won against Sri Lanka by 6 wickets (Mumbai)
The historic night on April 2, 2011, at the Wankhede Stadium, witnessed something marvellous and memorable as MS Dhoni’s iconic six as India chased down 275 to win their second ODI World Cup.
Sri Lanka posted 274/6 in 50 overs with Mahela Jayawardene scoring 103. In reply, Gautam Gambhir (97) and MS Dhoni (91 off 79)* bolstered their batting unit and steered the team to 277/4 in 48.2 overs, sealing a memorable 6-wicket win. This emphatic win sent the entire nation into frenzy.
5. 2013 Champions Trophy - Won against England by 5 runs (Birmingham)
MS Dhoni added another feather to his cap by leading India to victory in the 2013 Champions Trophy. The rain-affected final against England was reduced to a 20-over match for the first time in history.
India scored 129/7 in 20 overs, with Virat Kohli (43) playing a crucial role. Defending a modest total, India held their nerve, with Ishant Sharma taking two key wickets in the 18th over. England finished at 124/8, handing India a 5-run win. With that, MS Dhoni became the first captain in history to win all three ICC white-ball trophies - ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy.
6. 2024 ICC T20 World Cup - Won against South Africa by 7 runs (Barbados)
In a thrilling final in Barbados, India lifted their second T20 World Cup trophy after 17 years. The Men in Blue batted first and posted 176/7 in 20 overs, thanks to Virat Kohli's match-winning 76 off 59 balls (6 fours, 2 sixes) and a vital cameo from Axar Patel (47 off 31).
South Africa, in their first-ever T20 World Cup final, came close but fell agonizingly short in the nail-biting climax. Had it not been for Suryakumar Yadav's splendid catch (at the boundary line) to dismiss David Miller, it could have been a different story altogether.
Proteas needed 16 runs off the last over but could only manage 169/8. Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliant death bowling and Hardik Pandya’s clutch final over sealed the 7-run win for India.
7. 2025 ICC Champions Trophy - Won against New Zealand by 4 wickets (Dubai)
India lost two ICC finals against New Zealand (Knock Out 2000 and World Test Championship 2023). However, this time around, they ensured to put in a collective effort and got the job done. They continued their ICC dominance by winning the 2025 Champions Trophy in Karachi, which is their third Champions Trophy title.
New Zealand batted first and scored 251/7 in 50 overs, with Daryl Mitchell and Michel Bracewell scoring 63 and 53* respectively. In the chase, India kept calm under pressure, thanks to a brilliant start by captain Rohit Sharma. He played one of the best innings of his career with a pivotal 76 off 83 balls (7 fours, 3 sixes).
Shubman Gill scored 48 runs whereas KL Rahul remained not out on 34 as the Men in Blue aced the run-chase with an over to spare, winning the final by 4 wickets.
