The USA women's senior and Under-19 teams now have Hilton Moreeng as their new head coach. He succeeds Shivnarine Chanderpaul, whose tenure ended in 2023.
After serving as the head coach of the South African team for over 11 years, Moreeng's contract expired in March. Moreeng oversaw South Africa's historic run to the 2023 T20 World Cup final, where they were defeated by Australia.
“I am thrilled to join USA Cricket and eager to collaborate with both current players and emerging talent. My goal is to methodically build a competitive squad capable of rivaling the best in women's cricket globally. Together, we aim to foster a culture of excellence and achievement within USA Cricket, paving the way for a successful future on the international stage,” Moreeng said.
Chairman of USA Cricket Venu Pisike emphasized Moreeng's wealth of expertise, saying that his experience makes him a perfect choice to guide USA women's cricket during this revolutionary time, especially with the Olympics approaching.
“Coach Hilton brings a rich background and vast experience to USA Cricket having been a critical part of the transformation of South African women's cricket. USA women are also at the beginning of a transformative period with an Olympics in four years' time and we believe Hilton's successes, diverse experiences, and understanding of challenges in an emerging cricket nation is well suited for our program,” Venu Pisike said.
The 2025 U-19 Women's T20 World Cup preparations will be Moreeng's first task.
The USA women's team won the T20 World Cup American qualifying in 2019, 2021, and 2023. They played their first T20 International match against Canada in 2019. In 2024, the USA took part in the Women's T20 World Cup Global Qualifier as well, however they were unable to advance past the group round after losing all four of their matches. In April 2024, the women's squad played its first ODI match against Papua New Guinea. Their ODI debut provided a peek into the growth of women's cricket in the USA, despite the fact that it ended in a loss.
