Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusingha talks about the T20 World Cup squad all-rounders and spinners- Soumya Sarkar, Tanvir Islam, Mahedi Hasan and Rishad Hossain.
Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup squad are now in USA to play a three-match T20I series as a preparation for the World Cup. Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) releases a video on social media with Hathurusingha's views and opinions on the 15 members of the World Cup squad. In the video, Hathurusingha highlights various issues of the cricketers. He talks about separately about everyone.
Soumya is Hathurusingha’s one of the trustable players in the team. Hathurusingha said about Soumya, “Soumya Sarkar, naturally gifted player. I think he's underperformed so far. We have seen him glimpse of his best time to time. He can contribute all three formats of the game. Again, brilliant fielder. When he's at his best, he's a match winner. I hope he'll win a couple of games for us.”
Left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam brings a new dimension in the spin bowling unit. About him, Hathurusingha said, “Tanvir brings really unique skill set into our team. He can bowl with the new ball in powerplays. He has done well in local cricket, BPL DPL for a long time. His performance I think on domestic cricket gives us a lot of confidence that he can handle this level. As I said, a unique role to play. If he plays in the team that we expect him to be the enforcer in the power play.”
Mahedi has been a good performer for Bangladesh recent times, specially in power-play and death overs. Hathurusingha said, “Sheik [Mahedi] is again versatile player, all-rounder. Main skill is bowling. He again is very good with the new ball when he is under pressure. I think he thrives under pressure more than any other situation. Very smart. I think he is joker in the pack. Everyone take Mickey out of him in the dressing room. Yes, he gives all when he is in the middle.”
Once Bangladesh had a lack of leg-spinner in the team. But in recent times, Rishad has occupied that place in the team. About Rishad, Hathurusingha said, “I am really excited to see Rishad how he develop as a player. When we saw him earlier, rare breed in Bangladesh cricket leg spinner. But he's not classical leg spinner you see around the world. He's very tall, very athletic for a tall person. Brilliant fielder, one of the best fielders in the team and quick learner. I don't know what's going through his head, but he's under pressure seems to be very cool. And time to time he gives us outstanding performance with the bat. I would like to see that he's consistent with the bat.”
