West Indies’ batter Sherfane Rutherford was the star of the first ODI against Bangladesh, delivering a stunning performance with the bat to lead his team to a five-wicket victory on Sunday, December 8, in Basseterre. Rutherford’s blistering 113 off just 80 balls earned him the Player of the Match award and helped the hosts successfully chase Bangladesh’s challenging 294-run target with 14 balls to spare.
Reflecting on his purple patch, Rutherford attributed his success to discipline and hard work: "The key is to work hard on your game. I'm doing everything I can to be disciplined and give myself the best chance of performing well."
Talking about his approach to the innings, he added: "At first, I tried to hit the gaps, play with good intent, and run well. I knew I could always make up at the end even if I started slow."
Rutherford also showed resilience after taking a few hits while batting: "It’s part of the game. You take a few blows for the team. As soon as I get in, I realize I can take it on."
Praising his partnership with captain Shai Hope, Rutherford said: "It was good. He told me to take it deep. I'm looking to be consistent, and with the grace of God, hopefully, I'll continue to score runs."
The visitors put up a formidable total of 294/6. Mehidy Hasan Miraz scored a steady 74 off 101 balls, while Tanzid Hasan contributed a run-a-ball 60. A late flourish from Mahmudullah (50* off 44) and Jaker Ali (48 off 40) ensured a competitive target. Romario Shepherd stood out with figures of 3/51.
