Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has confirmed that Hannan Sarkar has resigned from his position as a national team selector, stepping down exactly a year after his appointment in February 2024.

A BCB insider revealed to BDCricTime that Hannan submitted his resignation with a one-month notice period. Regarding this, BCB’s Cricket Operations in-charge Shahriar Nafees said, "I am aware of the news, but the resignation letter is not submitted to me—it goes directly to the chairman."

The current Cricket Operations Chairman at BCB is Nazmul Abedeen Fahim.

Before joining the national selection panel, Hannan Sarkar had an extensive career as a selector for Bangladesh’s age-group teams. He was a key member of the selection committee for the Bangladesh U19 team, which won the 2020 ICC U19 World Cup.

His transition to the senior team came after the tenure of Minhajul Abedin Nannu and Habibul Bashar ended. Hannan joined as a selector, while Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu was appointed as the chief selector.

Under Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu's leadership, the selection panel earned praise for their decision-making approach. They made some bold yet logical selection calls, dropping and selecting players based on justified reasoning.

With Hannan Sarkar’s resignation, the national team selection panel now consists of:

·         Chief Selector – Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu

·         Selector – Abdur Razzak

With one selector down, it remains to be seen whether BCB will appoint a replacement or continue with a two-member panel. The board is expected to make a formal statement soon regarding the situation.

As Bangladesh gears up for major international fixtures, a strong selection committee will be crucial for shaping the team’s future.
