Indian coach Gautam Gambhir is eager to leave the nightmares of India's Test struggles behind. The Times of India reported that Gambhir will accompany the Indian senior team to England earlier than anticipated. The Indian team will start its next World Test Championship cycle (2025-2027) with a five-match Test series in England.
Yet, there is no word on whether Gambhir will make the trip with the Indian senior side as an observer or as an additional coach, a responsibility entrusted by and large to the National Cricket Academy head, VVS Laxman, in the past few years.
But the team led by Rohit Sharma did outstandingly well in the 2025 Champions Trophy, lifting the much-sought title without dropping a single game in Dubai. This victory can be a game-changer for Gambhir's coaching career.
Following their victory at the ICC tournament, Gambhir focused his efforts on red-ball cricket, where he had not enjoyed much success before. India under his captaincy, then, lost the home Test series 3-0 to New Zealand and later lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.
As per the report, Gambhir is developing a two-year plan, including the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, and the next World Cup cycle.
Gambhir has been negotiating with the BCCI ever since his return from Australia. He has shown interest in accompanying the Indian senior team so that he can better understand the reserve pool. "Ever since India won the Champions Trophy after Gambhir insisted on some wildcard players, it's to be expected that he will insist on it more in the future," a BCCI source.
One of the key issues is the reintroduction of A-tours for India. Since Dravid retired from the NCA, very few A-tours were conducted, and they were all shadow tours for a top-level series. Gambhir also feels more A-tours should be conducted. So he wishes to see things for himself."
India have not won a Test series in England since 2007. During their previous tour of England, the series was drawn 2-2. The Virat Kohli team was leading 2-1 in 2021 when the final Test was cancelled because of COVID-19 in the Indian camp. India were defeated in the rescheduled Test held in July 2022.
