In a surprising move, former Australian National Cricket team Test opener Joe Burns has been appointed as the captain of the Italy T20I team. Burns, who represented Aussies in 23 Tests and six ODIs, has switched his international allegiance to Italy and is now set to lead the rising European nation (in cricket) in the shortest format of the game.
Burns, born in Brisbane, Queensland, last played for Australia in the Boxing Day Test match against India in 2020. Following a period away from the Australian national team and being omitted from Queensland's contracts in 2024, Burns made the decision to represent Italy, honoring his late brother Dominic and embracing his mother’s Italian heritage.
The 34-year-old made his debut for Italy in 2024 and has played five T20Is so far, scoring 211 runs at an impressive average of 70.33. His standout performance includes an unbeaten 108*, showcasing his dynamic batting abilities. Burns' leadership will now be pivotal as Italy prepares for the 2026 T20 World Cup Qualifiers, where they aim to secure a spot in their first-ever T20 World Cup which is scheduled to play at India and Sri Lanka.
This appointment marks a new chapter in Burns' cricketing career, where his experience at the highest level with Australia will be invaluable for the emerging Italian team.
