India's tour of England is on the final page with only one Test to be played. The final Test was scheduled to play at Old Trafford from September 10th. But fear of COVID-19 in the Indian camp has changed things drastically.
India head coach Ravi Shastri and other few members of the coaching panel were tested positive for COVID-19 during the fourth Test at Oval. But all the players were tested negative in the lateral flow test and RT-PCR test as well.
While the visitors were preparing for the final Test, one more member from the support staff panel got infected with COVID-19. This raised concerns on the fifth Test as the person was involved in the training sessions. Again all the players have been tested negative in the tests done on the eve of the final Test.
Anyhow there was a fear of building a COVID-19 cluster in the Indian camp. As a precautionary measure, both BCCI and ECB came to a mutual agreement to cancel the fifth Test. England Cricket Board announced it officially through a press release.
"Following ongoing conversations with the BCCI, the ECB can confirm that the fifth Test between England and India Men due to start today at Old Trafford, will be cancelled. Due to fears of a further increase in the number of COVID cases inside the camp, India are regrettably unable to field a team.
"We send our sincere apologies to fans and partners for this news, which we know will cause immense disappointment and inconvenience to many," ECB said in the official statement.
