Faruque Ahmed, the former captain and chief selector of the Bangladesh national cricket team, has been elected as the new president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). This significant change comes following the recent resignation of Nazmul Hassan Papon, who stepped down from the position during an emergency meeting amid the ongoing political crisis in the country.
At 58 years old, Faruque Ahmed brings with him a wealth of experience, having played 7 One Day Internationals (ODIs) for Bangladesh. He previously served as the chief selector for the national team from 2003 to 2007 and was reappointed to the role in 2013 for a second term. Faruque, however, resigned from this position in 2016, citing various irregularities within the board, a move that has since enhanced his reputation for integrity.
His election as the new BCB president comes after a proposal directly from the highest authority in the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Faruque’s proven track record and strong stance against irregularities have made him the preferred candidate to lead Bangladesh cricket during this transitional period.
Faruque’s appointment is part of a broader restructuring within the BCB, as the board prepares for a new chapter in its history. The political situation in Bangladesh has also seen significant changes, with Sheikh Hasina resigning and a new interim government being established. The resignation of BCB’s Cricket Operations Committee Chairman, Jalal Yunus, a day earlier has further highlighted the extent of the leadership overhaul within the cricket board.
