Afghanistan thrashed South Africa by 6 wickets on Wednesday (September 18) in Sharjah. Fazalhaq Farooqi's deadly spell, with Allah Ghazanfar's assistance Afghanistan bowled South Africa all-out (106) for the very first time. In reply, Omarzai and Naib had a gutsy partnership together to script the history, on beating South Africa in ODI's for the very first time.
Afghanistan have beaten South Africa in ODI's for the very first time in history.
After choosing to bat first, South Africa probably had one of the worst calls ever. Afghan pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi ran riot through the protea top order. He first sent Reeza Hendricks stumps for a walk and then removed Tony de Zorzi. Things would have been stable for South Africa if the riot ended there but Fazalhaq then knocked over Protea captain Aiden Markram and South Africa were stuttering on 25-3.
After the first hot spell from Fazalhaq, Allah Ghazanfar was introduced to the South Africans. Ghazanfar chipped in away with some quick wickets and South Africa soon were crumbling on 36-7.
All-rounder Wiaan Mulder and Bjorn Fortuin then had a stable partnership. Despite the introduction of Afghan great Rashid Khan, the duo managed to handle him smoothly before Rashid knocked Fortuin over after a solid 30-run stand between this two. Wiaan Mulder however smashed a fighting fifty and helped South Africa get 106 on the board.
Fazalhaq Farooqi was the standout bowler for Afghanistan, picking up 4 wickets to his name. While Allah Ghazanfar had three wickets. Rashid Khan chipped in with 2 wickets.
In reply, Afghanistan too had a shaky start earlier on losing three wickets at quick rate and were on the brink of a massive collapse. But all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai and Gulbadin Naib stitched a partnership of 47* runs to steer Afghanistan home.
