The organizers of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) competition are planning to implement a new feature dubbed the "Power Blast Overs" to add more excitement and aggression to a specific segment of their competitors. In both innings, the feature is scheduled to give a special powerplay in the latter half.
"The Lanka Premier League 2024 will introduce an exciting new feature with the addition of a special power play towards the latter part of each innings," LPL organisers said in a statement. "This new innovation, named 'Power Blast Overs,' will provide each team with a two-overpower play during the 16th and 17th overs of their innings," the statement added.
On the new feature, Tournament Director of the Lanka Premier League 2024 Samantha Dodanwela stated, "We decided to bring this innovation in order to create further excitement for the league, which is growing year by year."
"This new introduction is sure to generate a lot of excitement among the fans, and the teams will need to strategize effectively to make the most of this period," he also added.
As usual, the outfield can only accommodate a maximum of five fielders outside of the two power-over sets. Running from July 1st through the 21st, 2024, LPL will clash heavily with Major League Cricket in the United States. The former will have more well-known international players while the latter will have more local followers; the LPL has always had trouble attracting international players due to the low salaries offered, but it does have some local supporters. There will be 20 league matches in the 2024 season, with five different franchises competing. After that, there will be three playoffs and a final. The league stage consists of two matches between each team, with four of the five teams advancing to the playoffs.
The Dambulla Sixers, a new franchise in Dambulla, is one of the teams. This month, the new proprietors of the Dambulla squad were announced. The previous franchise had to be terminated by Sri Lanka Cricket due to the arrest of one of the co-owners, Tamim Rahman, who was charged under the Prevention of Offences Related to Sports Act.
