Zak Crawley and Rory Burns provided England with their best opening stand of the tour, adding 68 in the run chase of 271. Runs came at high rate which had opened England's opportunity to win an away Ashes Test for the first time since 2010/11.
But that was not to be as England lost 10 wickets for the next 56 runs to be all-out for 124 in a dramatic collapse. The first to go wwas Burns, who bottom-edged Cameron Green onto the stumps at stroke of tea. Green then returned to send back Dawid Malan in the same fashion and Crawley for a good-looking 32.
Ben Stokes brought out a big shot to end up in Nathan Lyon's hands in the deep. Skipper Joe Root had no luck having been dismissed off one that stayed low from Scott Boland's bowling.
The procession continued till Ollie Robinson swayed away from a full bunger of Pat Cummins as the last wicket to fall.
Australia, who started the day at 37 for 3 in their second innings, were bowled for 155. Mark Wood's exceptional performance had them 6 down for 63. Alex Carey cashed in with 49 off 88 to take the lead past 250. Green also added valuable 23 runs in the 49-run seventh-wicket stand.
Wood ended with a six-for but his teammates at the batting order did not follow up seeing England end the tour in a disappointing fashion.
Travis Head, who scored the highest 357 runs in the series including 101 in the first innings in Hobart, was awarded both the player of the match and series awards.
