Denmark's Kaneria has expressed his criticism of Mohammad Rizwan for incorporating religious practices on the cricket field during the ongoing 2023 World Cup.

Former Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria recently raised questions about the public display of Namaz (Islamic prayers) by wicketkeeper and batsman Mohammad Rizwan during the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Kaneria suggested that Rizwan offers his prayers in the dressing room and not on the cricket field should speak. He also pointed out that Indian players also pray but do not do so in public to demonstrate their devotion.

In a recent interview, Kaneria expressed his criticism of Rizwan's public expression of religious devotion and suggested that such acts should be confined to the dressing room and not flaunted on the cricket field. Additionally, Kaneria pointed out that Indian cricketers like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are known for their religious practices but refrain from public appearances.

He continued: “What does it take to do it in front of everyone? We also do our puja. But we don't start with Aarti on site. What do you think – Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli don’t pray or Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj don’t offer namaz?”

Kaneria, who practices Hinduism, shared his experiences of discrimination during his playing days due to his religion. He revealed that his Pakistan teammates often woke him up for Fajr Namaz (morning prayers) and said, “My teammates always called me to inform me about the time for Fajr Namaz. After it happened a few times, I got fed up and asked her to stop calling me. After Inzamam-ul-Haq left, there was a lot of discrimination.”

“If I had converted to Islam, I would have captained Pakistan and broken all the records,” he said.

He further stressed that the situation in India is more harmonious compared to Pakistan, citing the example of Virat Kohli who defended Mohammed Shami when he faced online abuse based on his religion.

“All communities in India live together very peacefully. When Mohammed Shami was trolled, Virat Kohli was the first to support him. That never happened during my playing days. No Pakistan player has made such statements to me. “In India everyone is treated equally,” noted Danish Kaneria.

PCB approached the ICC when Pakistan players heard chants of “Jai Shri Ram” in Ahmedabad. However, offering namaz at a cricket ground is still not justified. Cricket is considered a religion in itself and the only prayer that can be said on a cricket ground is the players putting everything on the line.
