Australia opener David Warner bid farewell to Test cricket. Naturally, a topic is now circulating in Australia cricket, after Warner's retirement, who will play in the opening? So far, many names have come up to answer this question.
In domestic cricket, Cameron Bancroft, Marcus Harris, and Matt Renshaw have come up for discussion. In addition, Australia coach Andrew McDonald has also expressed the thought of opening with Cameron Green. Steven Smith has expressed his interest to bat in the opening during the Sydney Test.
However, even if Smith wants to play, Australia captain Pat Cummins is not willing to play him in the opening. Cummins spoke about this after whitewashing Pakistan 3-0 in the Sydney Test. He doesn't want to destabilize the batting order, so Cummins is happy with Smith batting at No. 4.
Cummins said after the match, 'I am very happy with what Smith is doing at number four. Of course Marnus (Labuschagne), Smudge (Smith), Trav (Travis Head), (Mitchell) Marsh are doing great at No. 3,4,5 and 6. So the first goal is not to break it.'
Cummins added, “I'm pretty happy with Smith's output at No. 4. Obviously Marnus [Labuschagne], Smudge [Smith], Trav [Head], and [Mitchell] Marsh have been pretty impressive at Nos. 3, 4, 5 and 6. So first instinct isn't probably to disrupt that."
Cummins added, "It's obviously going to be really hard to replicate Davey and what he's brought to it. I think you look for who is best placed to score runs, really. But I think, in Test cricket, there are some things that remain true - and that is you've got to be putting the pressure on the opposition. You've got to be ticking over the scoreboard. Not always - but most of the time - you've got to keep the scoreboard moving along.
"There are considerations, but realistically, if anyone is scoring runs in Shield cricket, it's probably a good sign they can do it at the next level."
Besides, Cummins is quite happy with the team's overall performance. He further said, "I thought it was a great series. Feel really happy that we got on the right side of a couple of tight moments, but it could have gone the other way also. Thought Pakistan were high quality. In Test cricket, there's nothing harder than playing away from home - conditions are so different - but thought they played really well. MCG could have gone either way if it wasn't for that hour last night. This one could have gone the other way as well."
Pakistan did not perform as expected in Asia Cup and World Cup. Babar Azam stepped down as Pakistan captain after the World Cup. After that, Shan Masood came to Australia with responsibility as the new Test captain. But Masood's captaincy started with a whitewash. Pakistan could not cope with Australia in the three-match Test series, losing all three matches and losing the series by a margin of 3-0.
