England's early exit came after consecutive losses to Australia Cricket Team and Afghanistan Cricket Team despite posting over 300 runs in both games. These defeats marked the end of a disappointing run under Buttler's leadership leading him to a quick decision about his future with the team.
Buttler, who took over the captaincy from Eoin Morgan in June 2022 led England to a T20 World Cup win in 2022. However since that victory the team has struggled in major tournaments. They were knocked out in the group stage of the 2023 ODI World Cup, lost heavily in the semifinals of the 2024 T20 World Cup and now they’ve been eliminated early again in the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Harry Brook to Take Over?
Harry Brook currently the team’s vice-captain for the ICC Champions Trophy, is expected to step up as England’s next white-ball captain. Brook previously captained England Cricket Team during their ODI series against Australia National Cricket Team last year and is seen as a rising star in English cricket. Former player Nasser Hussain also voiced his support for Brook stating he should be given the role in both ODI and T20 formats.
Since becoming the full-time captain, Buttler has led England in 45 ODIs, winning just 18 matches. Injuries and poor form, particularly with the bat, affected his leadership tenure. His win percentage stands at 41.86%, making him one of England’s least successful ODI captains, just behind Alec Stewart.
