The country's cricket board Cricket Ireland confirmed the matter yesterday (October 8). However, their statement did not specify anything about Young's injury. However, it is reported that the 32-year-old Irish cricketer's long-term injury problem has resurfaced during the World Cup preparation camp in Sydney.
"Unfortunately, whilst out in Sydney for our T20 World Cup prep camp, Craig experienced a recurrence of a chronic issue which we have been managing for quite some time," Mark Rausa, Cricket Ireland's head of physiotherapy, said.
"Whilst we thought we were on top of the issue, it sadly flared up once we arrived in Sydney and began training. Craig will now return home for an assessment with our medical specialists to plan out his rehab."
Notably, the 31-year-old Hume, who replaced Young, made his international debut in an ODI against New Zealand in July 2022. And the very next month he played his first T20 match against Afghanistan. Hume played for the South Africa Under-19 team. Then this South African migrated to Ireland.
Ireland will start their World Cup mission on October 17 with a match against Zimbabwe. Next, their opponents are Scotland and West Indies. All their Group-A matches will be played at Bellerive Oval in Hobart.
