“We are pleased to announce the signings of India Test batter Cheteshwar Pujara and Australian batter Daniel Hughes as overseas signings for the 2024 season,” Sussex tweeted.
In a major development for Sussex County Cricket Club, the county announced that it has re-signed experienced Indian batsman Cheteshwar Pujara for the upcoming County Championship season and the One-Day Cup in 2024. What's notable is that Pujara not only delivered brilliant performances for the prestigious English county, but also led the team last season, and his stay was something many expected.
Pujara scored 649 runs in eight first-class matches at an average of 54.08 runs. He also scored three centuries and two half-centuries. As skipper, the experienced batsman helped Sussex finish in the top three of County Championship Division Two.
The cricket club published a post on X (formerly Twitter) to announce the development.
“We are pleased to announce the signings of Indian Test batsman Cheteshwar Pujara and Australian batsman Daniel Hughes as overseas signings for the 2024 season.”
Sussex head coach Paul Farbrace has opted out of playing Pujara in the 2024 Domestic One Day Cup. The two foreign bowlers signed for the 2024 season are Jayden Seales and Nathan McAndrew. In his 18 County Championship games for Sussex, Pujara scored 1863 runs at 64.24, including three fifties and eight hundreds.
“I have enjoyed my time at Hove over the last few seasons and couldn’t be happier to be back with the Sussex family,” said Pujara, looking forward to returning to the county stage. “I look forward to joining the team and contributing to its success.”
“I am delighted that Cheteshwar is returning to Hove for the first two months of the season,” said Sussex head coach Paul Far brace, welcoming Pujara back to the team. “He is not only a high-quality player, but also a high-quality person. His experience and his calmness in games are a big asset for our team.”
Pujara averages 79.22 for Sussex in first-class cricket, with eight hundreds in 16 appearances, while Hughes, who opens the batting line-up in the Sheffield Shield, averages almost 37 in first-class cricket and over 58 in List A game has. He remained unbeaten with a half-century in his first Big Bash appearance of the season on Monday.
