Despite never featuring in the IPL, Mahmudullah Riyad received a heartwarming tribute from one of the league’s most successful franchises, Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
Mahmudullah’s final T20I match for Bangladesh, against India in Hyderabad on Saturday (October 12), may not have been a fairytale ending on the field, but it was a testament to his long-standing career. His farewell game ended with a modest 9-ball 8 runs, and Bangladesh lost both the match and the series 3-0. However, the respect he earned throughout his career was evident in the actions of India's captain, Suryakumar Yadav. As Mahmudullah walked off the field after being dismissed, Yadav approached him for a handshake and a pat on the back, marking a touching moment.
CSK soon after shared a heartfelt post on their social media, celebrating Mahmudullah’s cricketing journey. The post featured a photo of Suryakumar Yadav and Mahmudullah and read, “Big whistles for the memories and contributions in cricket. Wishing you the best, Mahmudullah!Respect.”
Despite not playing in the IPL, Mahmudullah’s consistency and experience as a finisher for Bangladesh, leading the team in crucial moments, earned him recognition from the broader cricketing world. Over a T20I career spanning 17 years, Mahmudullah played 141 matches, scoring close to 2,500 runs, including eight half-centuries. His calm and composed nature made him an irreplaceable asset to Bangladesh’s T20 side, where he often played the role of the finisher.
At 38 years old, Mahmudullah’s retirement from T20 internationals marks the end of an era, and CSK’s tribute highlights how respected he is in the global cricket community. The all-rounder, who had led Bangladesh in several ICC T20 World Cup campaigns, will always be remembered for his contributions to his country’s cricketing success, and the tributes from CSK only amplify his legendary status.
