New Zealand have thrashed Pakistan by 73 runs to go 1-0 up in the ODI series on Saturday (March 29) in Napier. A blistering 132 off just 111 balls from Mark Chapman helped the Kiwis get to a mammoth 344 on the board. In reply, Nathan Smith's four wicket-haul handed Blackcaps a fine 73-run victory.
Being inserted to bat first, New Zealand had a horrible way to start their innings as they lost their openers cheaply. Henry Nicholls too couldn’t last long as the Kiwis were reeling at 50-3. However, Mark Chapman and Daryl Mitchell came out together to do the rebuild job as the duo added a massive partnership of 199 runs, which turned the game towards the Kiwis way. Irfan Khan removed Mitchell after his fine 76 but Chapman had another partner in Mohammad Abbas.
Chapman brought up his hundred, making a swashbuckling knock of 132 off just 111 balls, hammering 6 sixes and 13 boundaries to his name. While Mohammad Abbas did the floater job, smacking a blistering cameo of 52 off 26 balls as the Blackcaps posted a mammoth total of 344 on the board.
In reply, Pakistan started cautiously as their opening duo of Usman Khan and Abdullah Shafique added 83 runs together before the departure of Usman after his 39 off 33 balls to Nathan Smith. Shafique too fell soon after as the visitors lost wickets in a quick succession.
Babar Azam and skipper Mohammad Rizwan then tried to rebuild things and salvage the partnership but were failed to convert things into big. Salman Agha and Babar smashed fifties but were unable to score big as the visitors were all-out for 271 runs, losing the first ODI by 73 runs.
