India’s opener Yashasvi Jaiswal found himself at the center of controversy on Day 5 of the Boxing Day Test during the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Jaiswal’s dismissal in the 71st over of India’s second innings became a major talking point, raising questions about the reliability of technology in decision-making.
The incident occurred when Pat Cummins, Australia’s captain, bowled a short-pitched delivery that Jaiswal attempted to pull. The ball went through to wicketkeeper Alex Carey, but the on-field umpire ruled it not out, suggesting there was no edge. However, Cummins and his teammates were confident there had been contact, prompting a review.
To the surprise of many, the Real-Time Snickometer (RTS) showed no spike when the ball passed Jaiswal’s bat. Despite this, the third umpire overturned the decision, citing a deviation in the ball’s trajectory. This controversial call led to a visibly frustrated Jaiswal engaging in a heated discussion with the on-field officials before reluctantly walking off the field after scoring a resilient 84 runs.
Following the match, Pat Cummins defended the decision, emphasizing that he and his team were certain that Jaiswal had edged the ball. Speaking at the post-match press conference, Cummins said, “Oh look, I think it was just clear that he hit it. We heard a noise, saw a deviation, so it was absolutely certain that he hit it. As soon as we referred it, you could see him drop his head and basically acknowledge that he hit it.”
Cummins acknowledged the limitations of the UltraEdge technology, adding, “UltraEdge… I don't think anyone has complete confidence in it, and it didn’t really show much, but fortunately, there was enough other evidence to show it was clearly out.”
