Fast bowler Mark Wood had a "phenomenal" performance, taking five wickets in six overs to put England on track for a whitewash victory over the West Indies in the third Test at Edgbaston. Ben Stokes lauded Wood's efforts.
With half-centuries from Mikyle Louis and Kavem Hodge, the West Indies staged a determined comeback at lunchtime on Day 3, reducing their overnight deficit of 61 runs to a manageable 57-run lead. Despite bowling a challenging spell earlier in the day, Wood failed to reap any dividends. By the second session, though, the speedster had discovered reverse swing and was putting on a pace-bowling display, taking five wickets for nine runs in six overs to reduce the West Indies to 175 and setting up an easy chase for England.
During the post-match presentation Stokes spoke to the host broadcaster, "The rewards that he [Wood] got I think was later than he actually deserved to get them. The effort that he always puts in when he wears his England shirt is just phenomenal. He's got the heart of a lion and that little sort of 45 minutes or an hour period when he had the ball is exactly what you want as a captain."
Lauding Woods he added, "Fast, extremely skillful, and he really blew the game open there for us. he was just phenomenal. It felt like he was going to take a wicket every ball. Obviously, when the balls reverse swinging at 93mph, it's definitely going to be a lot harder. He's very, very important. The skill that he possesses, the X factor he has, every team wants one of those and he showed why it's so important today."
After trapping Joshua Da Silva lbw, Wood bowled Alzarri Joseph with a nasty yorker that removed his middle stump. The West Indies batting ended quickly as Kavem Hodge, Jayden Seales, and Shamar Joseph all fell in an over.Stokes then took over as Zak Crawley was out getting his right index finger examined after hurting it in the morning session. They needed 82 runs to win. The captain scored England's fastest Test fifty off 24 balls, breaking Sir Ian Botham's 28-ball record, as the hosts reached their target in 7.2 overs.
