The upcoming season of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is set to be significantly influenced by the guidance of Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor of the interim government. Recently, his social business model was highlighted at the Paris Olympics, and now he will lend his expertise to the branding of the BPL.
The current board of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is optimistic about the plans for this season, seeking to impact not only the game itself but also various social structures and norms through the tournament. Along with Dr. Yunus, Sports Advisor Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan has also extended an invitation to collaborate on this initiative, as confirmed by BCB director Nazmul Abedeen Fahim.
In a media interaction, Fahim remarked, “If our chief advisor Professor Yunus comes to the field and makes a statement, or if we see a Hollywood actor or a renowned athlete associated with the event, it will surely attract media attention. Our efforts will be geared toward promoting this globally. I believe we can achieve much more this time than ever before.”
Addressing inquiries about the potential involvement of international stars, Fahim stated, “We absolutely have plans. It could be a cricketer or someone from a different sport. Many ministries will be involved, and this time we aim for a much larger scale. We hope they will invest in the event as well.”
However, there are concerns about the participation of cricket legends Shakib Al Hasan and Mashrafe Bin Mortaza in the BPL. Fahim acknowledged this, saying, “Our failure to nurture superstars until now is a disappointment. I hope new stars will emerge from this league. It would be great if Mashrafe and Shakib were present, as they certainly have significant brand value. Nonetheless, we must strive to spread this opportunity across the globe, which involves considerable work. The BPL will be used to raise awareness about various social issues. We will not just focus on the playing field; this initiative will resonate throughout the country. We will also reflect the spirit of recent movements in various stages of the BPL.”
Fahim emphasized Dr. Yunus's role, stating, “Our esteemed chief advisor contributed during the Paris Olympics, and he has been reserved for the upcoming Olympics as well. He understands how to connect events with social activities, inspiring people to engage in various social causes. He is genuinely interested in being a part of this.”
Fahim further noted, “The chief advisor has come forward of his own accord. His team is working on establishing this as a brand and finding ways to promote it globally. The world needs to see Bangladesh in a new light—its culture, sports, and lifestyle. We hope everyone will witness this transformation. Bangladesh will gain recognition as a brand.”
The next season of the BPL is scheduled to take place from December 30, 2024, to February 7, 2025. With the involvement of Dr. Yunus and innovative plans in place, fans can look forward to an exciting and impactful tournament.
