Bangladesh's T20 World Cup campaign has been a rollercoaster ride. They secured a spot in the Super Eight stage with a strong showing in the group round, defeating Netherlands, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.
Despite their initial success, Bangladesh couldn't overcome strong oppositions in the Super Eight stage. A 28-run defeat (DLS method) against Australia and a massive 50-run loss against India exposed their vulnerabilities. Chasing a daunting target of 197 runs against India proved too much for the Tigers. These losses left them on the brink of elimination, but a surprising turn of events has offered them a glimmer of hope.
Afghanistan's stunning victory over Australia has thrown Bangladesh a lifeline. Now, they have a mathematical chance to reach the semi-finals, but it requires a combination of factors to fall into place.
Bangladesh faces a win-or-go-home situation in their final Super Eight match against Afghanistan on June 25th. However, their fate doesn't solely rest on their own performance. They also require a significant favor from India. The Men in Blue need to overpower Australia in their June 24th encounter, with a win by at least 55 runs or chase the target with 41 balls to spare. Any defeat or washout in either Bangladesh's match against Afghanistan or India's clash with Australia will eliminate Bangladesh from the tournament.
On the June 25th, Bangladesh needs not just a victory but a convincing one. They must defeat Afghanistan by a margin of 31 runs or chase the target with 23 balls to spare. (Assuming the above explained scenario occurs in India vs Australia).
Bangladesh currently holds the worst Net Run Rate (NRR) in Group 1 at -2.489. This negative NRR makes it crucial for them to not only win their remaining match but win it with a significant margin to improve their standing compared to other contenders.
Here is the standing of Super Eights, Group 1
