Despite a spirited performance, Bangladesh’s journey at the Hong Kong Sixes 2024 came to an end just one step away from the final. Battling hard in the semifinals, the Tigers couldn’t overcome Sri Lanka, as their hopes for a spot in the final were dashed for the second time this tournament by the Lankans. Captain Yasir Ali’s golden duck added to Bangladesh’s woes as Sri Lanka clinched the game in a nail-biting finish.
In the group stage, Sri Lanka had already defeated Bangladesh, so the Tigers were eager to avenge that loss and secure their path to the final. Winning the toss, skipper Yasir Ali opted to bat, aiming to set a challenging total.
Bangladesh’s openers got off to a flying start, racking up 38 runs off just 11 balls. Abdullah Al Mamun smashed 16 off 4 balls with one boundary and two sixes before his dismissal. His opening partner, Jishan Alam, continued the assault, scoring 36 off 11 balls, including one boundary and five sixes, before departing. Mohammad Saifuddin fought hard after arriving at the crease, while Yasir Ali fell for a golden duck, adding pressure on Bangladesh.
Abu Hider Rony contributed 18 runs from 6 balls before getting out, followed by Sohag Gazi, who hit a six upon arrival but was caught at the boundary on the very next ball. Saifuddin stood unbeaten with a quick 23 off 12 balls, and Bangladesh ended their 6 overs at 103/5. For Sri Lanka, Tharindu Rathnayake was exceptional, taking four wickets and effectively restraining the Tigers' lineup.
Sri Lanka’s chase seemed effortless as their openers built a solid start. The pair of Sandun Weerakkody and Dhananjaya Lakshan added 58 runs for the first wicket, with Lakshan scoring 24 off 6 balls before being dismissed. Weerakkody’s 16-ball 50 brought Sri Lanka close to victory, although he had to retire according to tournament regulations, slightly slowing the run rate. However, Nimesh Vimukthi maintained composure, leading his side to a thrilling win with just one ball to spare.
With this victory, Sri Lanka advances to the final, where they will face Pakistan in a classic Asia showdown for the Hong Kong Sixes 2024 title.
